Weekly Hello! #26 — Refuel your "why"

Weekly Hello! #26 — Refuel your "why"
I wrote this entry overlooking the Zeitz MOCCA. It was inspiring.

I am at the midway point of my leave — we're also at the midway point of the year —  and already feeling immensely refreshed. I can attribute most of this to a single shift; inspiration. We often get caught up in the motions of day-to-day life so much so, that we forget why we work so hard. It's not only so that we can keep up with the ever-rising cost of living, but it's also to give ourselves options and freedom. Why then do we never stop to reflect and enjoy the privileges we've allowed ourselves?

I enjoy the life I lead, with all its stresses and frequent monotony. This is not because I'm a boring old man, although I am at heart, it's because there's a "why" humming along in the background at all times. At the core of it, this "why" speaks to personal and communal freedoms. When my "why" is humming at too low a volume, almost everything is difficult to do. I find myself using statements which are prefixed with "I have to..." instead of "I get to..", a dangerous, subtle shift in perspective.

I have come to believe that we need more of is not discipline, but instead self-compassion. Discipline is important, it's definitely better than relying on motivation, but it has its limits and can eventually turn into self-disdain if solely relied upon. Instead of simply "dealing with it" when things begin getting difficult for long stretches of time, why not ask ourselves, "How could I return joy to this activity?" How could I refuel my "why"? How could I persist from a place of self-compassion?

I hope you are able to afford the time to seek inspiration and joy in the coming week! Talk soon; be you, be great!
