Dearly Beloved

“This is a day for gratitude, for what I have and the love I’ve had the honour to receive.”

15 years ago I lost my sister. Her name was Thato, derived from Thatohatsi, Sotho for Beloved. She was my earliest role model and mentor.

I see glimpses of her in myself. My confidence, how I squeeze toothpaste from the bottom and my empathy towards others.

7 years later I lost my mothers mother. She was my spirit guide; a great storyteller. I see her in my brother. Today would have been her birthday and she’d be nearing 100 years of life.

Today is Mother’s Day and I still have my mother. My connection to all the women that raised me. This is a day for gratitude, for what I have and the love I’ve had the honour to receive.
